Welcome to the Home Group section of our webpage!
We are excited you are reading this because home groups are the primary place we see the ministry of our church happening! Even in the New Testament, the word "church" is used far more often to describe a small group of people (as opposed to large weekly service), who, meeting together in homes, tried to live out the Christian life together. That is why we see ourselves as a church of small groups, rather than a church with small groups! For in what better context can we live out the call to love, support, edify, give, and serve one another for the mutual building up of the body of Christ (Ephesians 4; 1 Corinthians 12) than in small, intimate groups? As Jesus modeled the value of "keeping it small" with his group of twelve, so too the church should "keep it small" if it wants greater intimacy, closeness, discipleship, and mission!
Without God living and active in this world, our faith is nothing but religious morals and pointless rituals. The apostle Paul says if Christ has not risen from the dead, that our faith is worthless, and we are among all people the most to be pitied (1 Corinthians 15:17-19 paraphrased). But He is risen, and the first section of our vision statement acknowledges that belief, and that nothing is more important to our faith than to walk in relationship with Him. It is very easy for us to go through the motions of Christianity, but to forget to spend time and to focus on God Himself; but consider the call and warning of Christ found in John 15:4: "Abide in me as I abide in you. Just as the branch cannot bear fruit by itself unless it abides in the vine, neither can you unless you abide in me." Jesus' words here are clear: with Him, we can bear fruit; and without Him we will accomplish nothing. In this we also want to remember that the life that Jesus calls us to is a life lived to the fullest (John 10), and that in Him we may rejoice in His love and fellowship. That is why we also include the word "enjoy" in our vision statement. In the words of the Westminster Catechism: "The chief end of man is to glorify God, and to enjoy Him forever." We hope our church, and our home groups, will strive to accomplish both of these things: glorifying God, and enjoying Him forever!
While each one of our home groups is distinct, based upon the diverse make up of the people that are in them, we strive, in everything we do, to follow the five Es of our vision statement. Keeping reading if you would like to learn more about them.
